Evolution of type

Developed by a graphic design company, this website is presented “as an introduction to the origins, evolution, and applications of modern letterforms.” It is organised into four main sections. ‘Origins’ describes the development of written language. ‘Letterform’ focuses on the development of handwriting and moveable type, providing examples of handwriting from the 5th-9th centuries and typefaces from 15th-21st centuries. ‘Composition’ looks at the layout of types and fonts on a page, while ‘Output’ considers the display of type and fonts, particular on computer screens. Other sections include a glossary of ‘Type Terms’ and a bibliography and Web directory of type-related ‘Resources.’
